Monday was a great day. We had our opening chapel in Athens at the Georgia State Botanical Gardens. It was so great to be back there, it is a beautiful place that I get to go to and meet with God. He shows up everytime, and I am so grateful for that! I got to pray with a few of the first year girls and share with them my experiences last year. I love them all so much!

On Wednesday night, Pastor Jordan spoke a powerful message on suicide. It was incredible to realize just how many of our students are dealing with this issue, or have been effected by it. At the end of the night, I got to pray with and talk to one of my small group girls about the issue and help her break free of the effects in her own life. It really was such a privilege to be part of helping her change her lifestyle.

Friday night was another incredible one. All of the Masters Commission girls went to Jeanne’s house and we discussed the sisterhood, and how important it is for the year. As second years, we shared on how our sisters helped us last year and how important it is to be there for each other. Every girl in my class has helped me in some way or another. At the end of the night, Jeanne gave us all a necklace and we just hung out and had fun. She is such a good mom away from home!

On Saturday we had a family field trip to sliding rocks in southern Georgia. We climbed a mountain and swam in a huge waterfall! It was a great experience, and I loved doing it again, as we did it last year too.

This past Sunday was the church picnic! I helped assist in running it, and it was a lot of fun. The people at the Tabernacle are so amazing, and really have wisdom of the ages. I love to talk with them and build relationships. They really have a special place in my heart! Later that night our mentor family found out who our “kids” are for the year. I am so excited, and feel truly privileged to be able to guide these guys through the year. We have our first family time on Tuesday; I’ll let you know how it goes!

Today was a glorious day off. I went to Perimeter mall with a bunch of first year girls and we just relaxed and had fun! I really love these girls already, and I can’t wait to get to know them better. God has really put these girls on my heart, and I know he is going to do great things in them!

Let me start off by saying, it was a GREAT WEEK. It had its challenges, but it seems my reoccurring phrase that I keep telling myself is that God won’t give me anything I can’t handle. He will stretch me, but not throw me in the deep end and leave me to drown!

On Tuesday everyone on the cadre executive team was invited for breakfast at Jeanne’s. We talked about the upcoming year and how what we do really has a rippling effect across the nation in youth pastors lives, and their kids. It really is such an opportunity!

The next few days involved preparation for orientation weekend and ultimately preparing ourselves for them. We were all sweetly reminded of how we came in last year… far from perfect! In the day we would assemble binders, make welcome home baskets, and order any materials needed. On Thursday night we were divided up in our AC families and sent to different apartments for “scenario night”. At each apartment, there was staff members acting out different situations we will face this year. As a second year and a leader to first years, we had to confront the situation and lovingly help them change.     The scenarios ranged from a girl with a messy bedroom to a guy caught smoking on the porch. It really was a great night, and taught me a lot on how to correct my brothers and sisters in the right way.

Saturday finally came; ORIENTATION DAY! It was such an incredible thing to see everyone’s families and the students all together for the first time. I got a little teary eyed remembering what this day meant to me last year. After spending the morning going over the year, we came back to the apartments and helped our girls unpack. Having three more people really did make our apartment feel like home!
On Sunday we went to church, had a breakfast for their families and students, and went to the main church service. Jeanne spoke and as usual, it was incredible. After church our girls went out and said goodbye to their families, while I prepared for roommate night.

For roommate night we drove to Perimeter and found a restaurant we could all enjoy: Chilis! After eating there together, we went to Walmart and bought anything else we needed for the apartment, as well as some foam core board and paint. What did we need that for? Later that night we made an apartment creed. We all brainstormed ideas that we wanted our apartment to be this year, and the atmosphere we wanted to create. It’s not completely painted yet, but here is what we decided:

“As the apartment of 910, we promise to first and foremost put God first above anything else. We vow to create a relaxing, peaceful environment where we are free to be ourselves. We will be an encouragement to each other, and adding to the positive atmosphere we want. Together, we will protect each other’s hearts and commit to looking out for each other wherever we may be.  We will not be afraid to confront each other in the right and honest way, and receive any confrontation as a way to be better. Lastly, our apartment will be a FUN EXPLOSION!”

We all signed, and then I made bazookies for my girls; half-baked cookie dough and icecream!

When Monday came, we went to church for a continuation of orientation week. We went over what’s expected, gave the 1st years a tour of the Tabernacle, and talked to each other about our roommate nights.  Later that day we embarked on a secret field trip: we went to Buffalo’s Southwest Grill in Athens and ate some amazing Mexican food as a family of 96. After dinner we went to the Georgia State Botanical Gardens for our opening chapel.  I remembered this night for me a year ago, when God did so much in my life, and showed me a glimpse of what I was called to become this year. We had a time of worship, Jeanne spoke, and then we received tokens and prayed together. I got the chance to pray with a few of the first year girls, and it so blessed my heart to help them sort out what they want from this year too. It really is such an honor that I am able to help them in this stage of their lives. God also confirmed to me once again that this is where I am supposed to be. There are so many more challenges this year than last, and although I feel incapable, I know with God I am a victor. Pray for me that I rely solely on God, and not myself!

My First Post of my Second Year at Masters Commission ATL!

I have only officially been a second year for a week, but it seems like an eternity already. I have done so much, learned so much, and realized just how God has lined my footsteps to be here again.

Friday, September 3rd I hit the road with my mom and dad. We drove all the way down to Georgia, and made it by Sunday afternoon. It was a great drive, and I loved getting the chance to spend some good quality time with my parents. I love them so much, and I’m so thankful for what they have done for me. They really are such a blessing!
Tuesday morning I moved into my new apartment. It’s a 3 bedroom just like last year, but I have new roommates. I’m the resident advisor (RA) for our apartment, so it’s my job to make sure everyone is taken care of and that we get along, and keep our apartment clean. The first year students don’t move in until this Saturday, but I love them already and I can’t wait to help move them in!

Tuesday and Wednesday were our move in days, and Wednesday night we all headed to Oxygen, our youth group, to meet up with our students. It was such a happy reunion! I missed my small group, Audax, so much this summer… and to see my girls again was so great. I can’t wait to be with them for the year again!

Wednesday night we left after Oxygen to Forsythe, GA for our leadership retreat. From Wednesday to Friday our entire 2nd year class, the 3rd year interns, the 4th year support staff, and staff met to discuss the upcoming year, what we want to change, our targets on the wall, and how to improve. I found out my masters “husband” that I lead an accountability group with, and we even had a fake wedding that was one of the funniest moments I have had to date. Also this trip, I found out my portfolio for the year. As a second year, we have a portfolio consisting of different ministry and masters jobs we are responsible for the year. This year, I have 7:

1.    1. House Prep co-lead for Cadre: In a nutshell I lead a team of about 5-6 people, and we go before and after each cadre to prepare Jeanne’s house. We make sure it’s clean and in great shape so it can be used for a place that youth pastors can be coached and effectively ministered to.

2Creative Art and Design co-track lead: Remember last year when I took Inner city, Administration, and Verbal Communications Classes? This year I have been chosen to lead a class about how to minister using art and set design in church or any sort of ministry setting. The fact that I haven’t even taken this class before is a big indicator of how much the staff must believe in me to think I can do this! I’m nervous, but I’m excited. I am very creative and I know that I can help others bring out their creative side!

3.    3. Female Room Check lead: I am in charge of checking all the girls’ apartments and making sure they are clean for our weekly room checks. If they are messy, I issue probation for Saturday morning. I am excited for this one especially, as I am a clean person and I am happy to help others in this area.

4.    4. Under-shepherd for Audax: This is a big one. I am one of three head leaders of our small group, and act as a youth pastor to them. I never thought they would give me this role, but I am so privileged to do it. As the only girl under-shepherd, I will be responsible for helping them spiritually and for the health of our entire group. I can’t wait to jump in, and I know it’s going to be such a rewarding experience!

5.   5. Academics Grader: I will help grade scripture studies and other papers of first year students for our academic director. It’s a great opportunity to help them dive deeper into God’s word, as well as learn from what they have found as well.

6.   6. RA: I mentioned this above, but above all being a mentor to those I live with and making sure our apartment is a great environment.

7. AC Mom: Our Masters “families” really are just small groups of 5-7 people who go out and relax, have fun, and help each other throughout the year with any problems or situations that arise. As a 2nd year I have a “husband” and we will have first year “kids” that we mentor and take care of. I’m so excited to get to know my girls and help them any way I can!

Along with everything I did last year, I have these jobs that I am personally responsible for. Then there are the online classes I take with Southeastern University... it’s going to be a very challenging, busy year. The first few days I was here, I honestly felt scared and unsure that I could do everything expected of me. I was reminded that I couldn’t do this year without God being my only strength, and it’s so true. This year will undoubtedly be the hardest year of my life. But I can’t wait to see how God will change me, mold me, and make me more into his image by using me at Masters for a second year.

On Friday night we got back from our leadership retreat, but only for an hour or two. The next few days we embarked on our own version of the amazing race. We were given clues and pit stops in Tennessee and Georgia, and had limited resources to complete it all. This is what we were allowed to bring, and the only things we had for the two days: 1 sleeping bag, 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of underwear, 1 pair of socks, 1 pair of sneakers, 2 shirts, 1 backpack, ½ gallon of water, and 3 power bars. We weren’t allowed any makeup, our hair was a mess from the challenges, and we couldn’t dry our wet clothes (it rained) or shower. We were split up with our mentor group, and drove around in cars to the different challenges: all while we were tied together on a rope! In the course of the two days I went white water rafting on class 4 rapids (class 6 is Niagara falls) which was scary but incredible, I went swimming in Georgia red clay, I slept outside in the rain with just a sleeping bag, I saw beautiful Tennessee mountains and the gorgeous countryside of Georgia, and I went to a little German town called Helen. It was so cool to really bond with my fellow classmates, and through all the challenges our mentor family won! It was so great to get to know the 2nd and 3rd year students again after a summer apart, and we all really helped each other and looked out for each other. After our amazing race, we came home Sunday night and rested after an incredible journey.

Today I had the day off, and went to the Golden Corral buffet with my mentor family to celebrate our win. I helped some of the girls move in, and went grocery shopping. I have done so much the past week, and I have loved it all. I love being here, I love what God is doing in me, and I love having the peace of knowing this is exactly where he wants me to be. This coming week we have a lot of preparations to do for the first years to come, but I am more than excited about it. I know God is going to use me here! That’s it for this week, but expect another update next Monday, and hopefully some pictures too!

My Last Post of my First Year!

First of all, sorry everyone that this is so late, and I missed a week. My laptop was stolen! (More on that later). All in all, the last two weeks of my year have been incredibly life changing. I am not the same girl that has walked in this place, and yet I won't be satisfied with where I am at. I came in this place a know it all, and I leave knowing I have so much farther to go. Let me start though where I left you two weeks ago!

On Sunday I moved out of my apartment for the last cadre of the year! It was a great one to end the year off, and Monday as well as Tuesday I got to spend time with them and get a chance to pour into their lives. Cadre, you have taught me how to serve, and I have been made so much better because of you.

Wednesday was not an especially great day for me as I had a fever and couldn't go in that day. I had to study through the sickness, however, as my trimester exam was the next day! I managed to do very well despite it, and after our exam on Thursday we went to downtown Decatur to take yearbook photos. I've posted some at the bottom! Later that night we had a bridal shower for Lucy, one of the 3rd year students. She is getting married to Pastor Adam this summer! I'm so happy for them both, their relationship really is a God-honoring one.

On Friday night we had an Audax leadership hangout, and Hosanna and I decided to dress up for the occasion. We went over to one of the apartments and spent 4 hours having an encouragement chair: where one of us sits in a chair and we all take turns encouraging them! It was a great way to let each other know how far we have come, and what we see in each other. I loved the experience, and we all left so much more confident than we came in.

On Saturday It was our last official day off, and that involved worship practice for our chapel that was only days away. As I mentioned before, I was one of the team leads and it was great to see our class work so hard to get a task done. Later on I will let you know how it went!

Sunday was a great day- my family flew in a week early for graduation! After church, the first year girls all went CAMPING! It turned into a crazy fiasco and we ended up sleeping on the side of the road by a church, and getting up at 4 am to leave, but it was worth it. I made so many priceless memories that night! Thank you Christina for putting in so much time into our class!

When we got back from camping, we had only a few short hours to sleep until Monday-Packing-Day became a reality. I did not like packing up all of my things, it just made it a reality that in a week I would be leaving my amazing roommates! It's crazy to think of how we all got along so well, all six of us! Sure we had our fights, but we were made better by them. I am so grateful that Allie, Heather, Danielle, Kasey and Lyn have been in my lives this year. After packing up our apartments, we had a Masters girls clothing swap! All of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year girls, even Jeanne Mayo brought their unwanted clothes over to an apartment and we all came out with new outfits. It was such a girly thing to do but we loved it!

The next day was a huge highlight for me. After prayer we had ALL DAY FAMILY DAY! We started off with a trip to walmart to buy all the necessary items for a cookout at Piedmont Park. After grilling there, we went to the same spot that we had our first family time, and we all went around and encouraged each other about how much we have changed. I could barely talk I was crying so hard! We played games and just had fun, and then we drove out to Athens and met up with the entire Masters gang at Buffalo Wild Wings. After a big family meal together, we drove to the Botanical gardens: home of our opening chapel in September, and now our closing chapel of May. Jeanne spoke about how these last 9 months are only a small, small part of the rest of our lives, and encouraged us to keep going. She prayed with each one of us and anointed us with oil, and then we all went around and prayed for each other. The support of Masters is one thing I will deeply miss. It is like none other than I have seen!

Wednesday was our final Oxygen, and the last time we would see some of our students. It was O2 night, and our students set up our room with one big chair and dimmed the lights... yes thats right, another encouragement chair! They all went around and told us how much we've meant to them throughout the year, and how they are better because of our impact on their lives. It was a great way to end the year with them.

On Thursday PJ surprised us for our last life lessons and we went to Stone Mountain! After hiking approximately 1/4th of the mountain, we stopped and he talked to us about the successes of the year, and more importantly to keep going this summer. He recorded a personalized cd for each one of us and handed them out right before we descended the mountain. It was one of the greatest memories I've had of the week! When we got back it was time to set up for our first year chapel the next day! There was tokens to make, the rooms to set up, the technical aspects to be figured out, our worship team had to practice... it was a lot of work! There were a lot of other distractions that came our way that night as well. At 10 pm our apartment was informed that our apartment was broken into, and many things including my laptop was stolen. It was a very frustrating discovery, but I kept going and finished up everything that was going on at the church. I only slept 4 hours on the floor (we couldn't stay in our apartment until the locks were changed), but it was okay. Our chapel the next day was SO worth it!
The same Thursday night, our brothers decided to put on a dinner for the first year girls. They made us fettucine alfredo, served us drinks, and told us how much they appreciated us. It was simple but so touching!

Friday was the big day, our chapel day! Our theme was the Holy of Holies, and many parents showed up for it as well. It was a huge success. God's presence, what we talked about, completely filled the room. One girl was even healed from a severe nerve disorder! It just goes to show that a heart of expectancy will truly see God. After chapel, Jeanne treated us to lunch as a thank you for all of us serving at cadre. It was so nice, and the waiters came around and served you any kind of meat you wanted! After that, we had grad rehearsal and Audax went out for their final outing of the year: Cici's pizza! I'm going to miss my girls, they have shown me so many things and have been such a blessing to have around. It's crazy to see how much they have grown too!

On Saturday, we had our graduation banquet. Everyone dressed up, ate at Maggiano's, and reminisced over the year. I couldn't believe that we were graduating the next day- it feels like we only moved in a week ago!

At last Sunday came, graduation day. The service was so beautiful, everyone was laughing or crying or both! As I walked across the finish line, it was almost as if I felt God's joy in my accomplishments. We had a big party at Jeannes that night, and it was a great way to make some last memories and begin the goodbyes.

Monday morning I packed up my last remaining items and said goodbye to my roommates. I could barely get out my words, I was crying so hard! These girls were like sisters to me, and will be very much missed. I'm going to miss everyone I've met this year, and I hope I get to see them all soon!

Looking back on the year, I've realized how far I have really come. I worked hard this year and did it right, keeping the standards placed on us to the best of my abilities. I have sought God with all my heart, never being satisfied. I think one of the biggest changes, however, was the fact that I came in here thinking I knew everything, and am leaving knowing I have so much more to learn. I have become confident, and yet humble. The great work that God has done inside of me is far from over. In fact, its really just beginning. These past 9 months have trained me for life, and I'm going to leave here using that knowledge as much as I can. It's time to come home... and I'm going to enjoy this season of my life as much as I can. To all my faithful blog readers, I hope my testimony in the last few months has helped you in some way. Even if it was just something to read! I'm not going to be blogging over the summer, but I'll be back at it in September... for my second year!
May God bless you all, Annie in Atlanta

Two Weeks To Go!

The weeks are going by quicker than ever; in two weeks from today, I will be on a plane headed for Nova Scotia! On Monday night, yes, I did something I had been contemplating all year long... I cut my hair. I put pictures below, but it is quite the change for me! I like it, but at the same time I miss my long hair... saying that, it is just hair. It will grow back!

On Tuesday... it was my birthday! My family decided to have my birthday on May 11th, before I go home so we could celebrate it together. My Dad baked me a cake, my Papa made me a ton of pictures and signs, and they all blindfolded me, taking me to a park. We played pin the tail on the turtle, we had a pinata, ate cake and just had fun together. Tuesday we also had our first chapel meeting as a class, spending over two hours contemplating ideas, decor, and everything that we want our service to be. It was really cool to see our class speaking up as a whole and trying to make something great. I got to help put together the worship team, and I was so excited to do that since it is something God has really put on my heart this year. We are still in the beginning stages of everything, but I will put pictures up when it happens!

Thursday and Friday I had one of the most hard projects that I've had to do all year long. As part of my inner city outreach track I am taking, they require us to be "homeless" for a day. More specifically, from 6pm Thursday night to 6pm Friday night. We had to dress and look as if we were homeless, we could not sleep in our beds, eat our own food, shower, brush our teeth, spend any of our own money (unless we beg for it), essentially anything a homeless person does not have access to, we don't either. I will admit, at the beginning of this project, I had a very bad attitude! I did not want to be put out of all the things in my life. Through this project, I learned that being homeless is very frustrating and inconvenient! They have to rely on others for any help they get, usually something that society is hesitant to give. The only thing I had to eat in that time was a donated Coke and french fry! The hardest part was Friday afternoon when they dropped us off at a gas station to beg for money. It was humiliating, but it opened my eyes. I was paired with another guy (for safety reasons) and we only made $2 out of everyone we asked of change. The next time I see a homeless person, I am going to help them in any way I can. As Christians, we are responsible to be Jesus with skin on... to be hope to the hopeless. When will we start, if not now?

Saturday I got to hang out with my O2 group, Audax. I love those girls so much! As the year is ending, I've had a chance to reflect on the progress our team has made as we've let God use us in their lives. One of my students got a full-ride scholarship to Harvard! It will be hard to say goodbye for the summer, but it comforts me to know I have a cadre of jr. high girls waiting for me at home. It will be so much fun to hang out with them again!

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

I have a lot of exciting things that happened this last week. Last Monday, I found out that I GOT A JOB!!!  I will be working at Rock Church this summer as their "summer student"; helping out with the Sunday School program, vacation Bible school, and around the office. It is a full time position so I will be busy this summer, but I am so excited! It truly is a blessing from God, and I am looking forward to getting started.

On Tuesday I found out I was chosen to be on the admissions call team, and we have begun meeting every day to recruit students for Masters next year. It really is a cool opportunity to talk to students in the same situation I was in a year ago. This place has changed my life, and its not a stretch to say that it could change theirs, too.

Wednesday night was O2 night, where as small groups we split up and have our own service for our kids. We talked about the importance of quiet times with God, and I spoke as well as led worship for our group at the end. That night I realized how much I have grown this year; I came in an insecure, fearful girl, and am leaving a confident, fearless girl. Although I am still fighting insecurities, I've realized that I am the only thing holding me back. God will use me only as much as I let him. I won't be silent anymore!

At the end of the year, every class is responsible to run a chapel. They come up with everything; the theme, worship team, message, and everything that goes along with it. On Thursday, I found out I was chosen to be one of the four leads for our chapel. We mediate the discussions, solve conflicts, set meeting dates and deadlines, and organize our class. It is going to be a lot of work, but I'm excited of the privilege to lead our class!

Friday and Saturday were great days to hang out with my small group, Audax. We went to Charmaynes dance performance, and the next night a few of my girls slept over. It was great to hang out with them over the weekend!

Sunday was Mothers Day, and my family went to my Papa's apartment to cook lunch together. Today was our turn to plan a family time; we went to my Dad's favorite restaurant called Bojangles. Then we took them to a lake nearby, were we got out a ton of pool toys we bought and had fun swimming around. I have enjoyed my Masters family a lot this year, and I know being a mom next year will be a great joy for me.

The countdown is on: in three weeks from today, I will be HOME!

Monday, May 3, 2010

This past week was a lot of work, but a lot of fun too. From Saturday to Tuesday we worked at the Georgia Dome at a huge Microsoft convention. We acted as greeters and ushers for the various sessions, and it was easy work for what we were paid. Even though we were fed all you can eat catered food, it was easy for some to get bad attitudes. Especially on a 18 hour shift! God really showed me his goodness through the experience. We got paid $14 an hour to raise money for our tuition, so Masters can keep running and charge us more than a thousand dollars less than what our tuition should be. A lot of students couldn't afford this place without these fundraisers, so why are we complaining over them? We should be glad! It's funny how God can change your whole perspective on things.

Wednesday was our mid-week day off, as we got in late from the fundraiser the night before. Heather and I decided to go to the pool and swim for a few hours, then head to Sonic for half priced drinks. We went to oxygen that night to meet up with our kids, and hung out afterward with a bunch of other girls. One thing I've learned this year is that if you don't take care of yourself, you are no good to anyone. It is so true: you need days off!

Thursday and Friday were "regular masters days". We had prayer, scripture studies tests, life lessons, lunch, and split off. What was not regular was the fact that Mike Rogers came in town Friday! Mike is a very successful business man on Jeanne's Youth Leaders Coach Board. He came in town to visit and just be around the Masters gang, which we all enjoy so much. We had a session where we could ask him anything, and I have pages of notes from it. Mike loves the rain, and he told us that it always rains when he leaves. Sure enough, its raining today- in the midst of a very sunny few weeks!

Last night we had a girls only pool party. It was quite the sight! We just had fun, and it was so good for us all to hang out together; these are the memories I will remember. Four weeks from today, I will be moved out and on my way back home... it's crazy to think about!

Saturday, April 24, 2010

This week has gone by so quickly. Coming home from our missions trip, we had Saturday and Sunday off to rest and get laundry done. On Sunday afternoon, my roommate Danielle and I found a lake (a huge deal in Atlanta, because there is hardly any) and went out for some sun and swimming. While we were laying out and getting tans, I heard it was snowing in Nova Scotia... sorry guys!

Later that night, Beth and I headed to the airport to pick up Pastor Mike for cadre!!! It was so exciting to have him here, and see him get poured into by one of the greatest youth pastors in America. He left early Wednesday morning, but at least I get to see him in June! Speaking of cadre, we had another one on Monday and Tuesday. This one was extra special because it was the 2nd year members last one. We had a lot of surprises for them, and it was a bittersweet goodbye. To be a part of something that strengthens youth pastors all over America really is a priviledge. They will go home refreshed to reach out to all of their youth... it such a cool thing!

Wednesday we got back into the swing of things and had regular classes, followed by Oxygen that night. Pastoy Corey brought the fire with an incredible message on controlling your mind. We all went home with something to think about and apply in our own lives.

Thursday night was definitely a highlight of the year for me. We went to clean Jeannes house after cadre, and by the time we were done, we were tired and ready to go home. Just then, Pastor Sam came in with groceries and a big smile on his face. Jeanne and Bethany are gone to Rhode Island, so he was going to be home alone for the next few days, and he was so appreciative of our hard work cleaning he invited us to stay for some mac and cheese. Of course we couldn't decline! As he was cooking for us, he told us stories of all the things he has cooked before, and we were surprised at his experience. Despite his skill, he cooked the noodles far to long, causing them to fall apart and clump together. Then he added Vanilla soymilk to the mix; and a ton of butter. He was so excited for the meal that he got out the Christmas tablecloth and placemats! We called the guys doing yardwork in to join us, and we all sat down together to enjoy our "meal". Needless to say, none of us finished our super cheesy, clumpy macaroni pudding with a hint of vanilla. We all had a good laugh over it though, and I can say I had dinner with Pastor Sam!

Yesterday we had class and a leadership meeting as a small group. It was great to reflect on how far we have come, and what we can improve on, as well as having fun! The next few days we are working at a Microsoft conference to raise money for our tuition. I'll admit, not one of the things I would love to do... but our food is catered and buffet style, so at least I will be eating well!

Missions Trip to California

What an amazing time we had in California! Thank you so much to everyone who supported me through prayers and finances. God did a great work with our team, and you were a part of it! In a little over a week we had fed over 1500 families, and did various kids ministry programs. Here is a day to day look at our intinerary:

Thursday: Depart from Atlanta at 4am, arrive in Los Angeles at 12 am. We drove an hour or so to Isaiah's Rock, a food distribution centre right in the King families home. The family takes shifts around the clock, feeding anyone that comes to their door, as well as handing out groceries twice a week. They were such a blessing to us! They shared heart about their ministry, and then we went to Operation Blessings warehouse. We finished off the day with a time of worship, Jody shared a few words, and then we had the rest of the night to settle in.

Friday: We helped put on a service and hand out groceries at Isaiah's Rock. Over 400 families showed up, and even though the majority spoke Spanish, we got to pray with some of them for healing and salvation. That lasted a good part of the day, and after we went up to the mountains of California and had a cookout- it was a great time! Operation Blessing has their own cook on hand, so we ate really well the whole week. We had another time of worship and drove home late in the evening. It was a great team bonding experience, and I will remember that night for a long time to come!

Saturday: We worked with RedEye: a ministry Jeanne's son Justin Mayo started at the LA Dream Centre. Their main mission is to work with Hollywood youth and get them involved in their community by volunteering and having a positive impact. We went to the governmental housing section of town to pick up trash, and play with the kids at the playground. They were adorable, and I loved the experience. Justin gave us a tour of the entire Dream Center, then we went hiking up the Hollywood mountain! It was a great exercise, and a great time to get to know the staff and what they are all about. We got stuck in traffic for a few hours, but managed to make it home in time for worship and a few words from Clifton, the cook!

Sunday: We went to Saddleback Church- you might know their head Pastor, Rick Warren. He wrote The Purpose Driven Life! Israel Houghton is their worship leader, and their membership is at 40 000! We had a tour of one of their 40 campuses, needless to say I was impressed. After church. Operation Blessing treated us to lunch at Johnny Rockets, an old fashioned burger joint. We finished off the day by visiting Laguna Beach and Newport Beach to have fun, fellowship, and a nightly service led by Raymond.

Monday: This was our "Fun Day"! We spent it wandering around Hollywood Boulevard, seeing the sites and finding stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We found Billy Graham's! After that, we came home and had a delicious meal and evening service with Haley speaking.

Tuesday: We worked with a food distribution center at The Rock Church (coincidental, I know!) Their church has over 17 000 members, and their campus was equally amazing as Saddlebacks. We fed over 600 families that day, and then we went to the Yorba Linda Vineyard for our evening worship and speaking. This church had less than a hundred members, but it was funny how this church was where God spoke to me the most. It really is not about numbers! It was this night that God really spoke to me about the fear in my life, and how I was letting it hold me back from God using me for great things. I prayed and let go of my fears, deciding to trust God instead!

Wednesday: We went to the Fred Jordan mission, a food distribution center located in the roughest area of all LA. We had a service for the women and their children, giving them a meal, clothes, and groceries after. I got to work with their children, and it was amazing to me the state that they were in. Many were homeless, dirty, and we could hardly communicate with them because they all spoke Spanish. We managed to show them God's love though, and by the time they had to leave, many didn't want to! After the Fred Jordan mission, we went to a park in the lower income housing section of town. One guy told us of the gang shootings that take place frequently there, and how a nine year old boy was shot there only weeks ago. It broke my heart. A few hours later, nearly 200 kids showed up for our MetroKidz service (remember Bill Wilson?) and some of them were only a year old, with their parents nowhere in sight. The entire time, I had kids hanging off me. I fell in love with this little boy named Ernie, only four years old. He was so precious, and every kid I met that day has a piece of my heart. We ended the day with a service, and Dan shared a few words.

Thursday: Operation Blessing surprised us by taking us to DISNEYLAND! It was fun to relax and just be together and share the experience. After our fun filled day we came home and had evening service, going around and thanking each other for their hard work.

Friday: We said our goodbyes and went home!

God really moved on our missions trip. By helping all of these people, I realized that my whole life I asked God what I am supposed to do with my life. I realized this trip that it's not about me, it's about the people in need. I see homeless people in a whole new way now. There is so much need in this world, and I am challenged as to what I can do about it. Are we really doing all we could be?

Below are some pictures of our trip:
(Isaiahs Rock: the backyard where the hungry are fed, a line of families waiting for groceries, me at the MetroKidz service, the mountain we hiked and Hollywood sign, Justin Mayo and our team, us and the LA Dream Center, me on the teacup ride at Disneyland, me in front of Isaiah's Rock saying a big THANK YOU!)

Leading up to and including Spring Break!

Before break I found out some exciting news... I have been accepted back for a second year!!! I am so excited, and I am glad that most of the girls will be back next year with me. I can’t wait to come back and learn even more. After we found out, we had family time: we went to Kroger to buy groceries, and made dinner together, watching The Blindside. It was the perfect way to celebrate the news!

I am sure glad that spring break came when it did, because the past week involved late, late nights, and early mornings. On Thursday we had our trimester exam, and had to memorize 32 scriptures. It’s funny, because in high school, I hated to study; but learning these verses will help me for the rest of my life. I don’t mind studying here at Masters at all! It’s great to know that I am learning something that I can actually use.

Friday night we had a Bible study for our O2 girls; only two of them ended up showing, but it was great to help them dig into God’s word. We went through Ephesians 2, stopping every few verses to talk about what they thought it was saying. After that, we had fun! We joked around, and spent some good time together. I love how we are growing closer; and how I get to help them prepare for next year.

On Saturday, Melissa, Faith, Crissy, Lyn, and I drove off to Florida for spring break! We had so much fun, it truly was a week of relaxing. We went shopping at the Mall of Millenia, and The Loop; and got some great deals! We also went to Melbourne Beach, The Dolphin Resort at Disney to swim, and Clearwater Beach in Tampa. Yes, I did put on sunblock, and yes, I did burn anyway! I also enjoyed going to Downtown Disney with the girls as well as Universal Studios to see a movie and walk their Citywalk. I loved how much we got to sleep as well; we would go to bed early, sleep in late, and take naps! On Easter Sunday we drove back after church and came home late Sunday night.

Today I am unpacking, doing laundry, and repacking, ironically. We leave for California THIS THURSDAY!!! I cannot believe how it is already time to go on our missions trip. Once again, thank you all so much for your support, whether it was financially or through your prayers. We all have a heart of expectancy for this trip, and I am so excited to see how God will use us. I come home next Friday, April 16th, so you can expect pictures and an updated blog then!

Tailgate and Retreat

This week has involved last minute preparation for spring retreat, and tailgate night! For those of you who don’t know, we had a tailgate party to get everyone excited for the retreat this weekend. It involved decorating a car with your small group colors, having a cooking contest, and a small group chant contest. The winner of any category would win a $75 scholarship to the retreat, and so the stakes were high. My group Audax won the car decorating contest, which was such a blessing to our kids. We all were dressed up in workout gear (the retreat theme was The Biggest Loser) and I wish we took more pictures because it was a great night.

Tuesday involved us driving to Macon as a missions team to work at a food distribution centre. We made 350 boxes of food to hand out to needy families, and the work experience will come in handy when we go to California. Speaking of which, it’s coming up so soon! I fly out April 8th.

Last Wednesday I had a wonderful surprise- my brother came to visit! In January he had to leave in order to go be with his family, and so it was so good to see him again. We all went out to Sonic as a family, and had a great time. He is doing well, and I am so proud of him for living for God on his own. We all hope he can come for graduation and see us all again!

The retreat was a huge success. On Friday I found out I was selected to be on the retreat worship team, which I was so excited about! We played three times, and I am so glad for the opportunity. I loved to have the chance to pour into my small group girls lives over the weekend, as well as just hang out with them and get to know them better. They have their struggles, but I love to be able to help them out any way I can. They are such a blessing to my life! God totally did things in their lives, and I am so happy that they want to know him more.

Arriving home on Sunday, I was faced with reality again. This week we find out if we are accepted back for a second year, we have our trimester exam on Friday, and on Saturday I will be heading out to Florida with Crissy, Faith, Mel, and Lyn! Today I have been trying to find a job for the summer, and get a student visa figured out for next year. It’s getting stressful as I reach dead ends, but I know God will make a way for me to come back next year. I just need to trust him and pray about it! Please pray for me that I find a full time job, and I get a student visa. Those are both definite musts if I want to come back! Below are the few pictures I took at retreat: the set design, our small group Audax, and myself at worship practice. Also are a few from the tailgate party: our car, us doing our workout routine, and just having fun. I love all the memories I make here :)
